Death of former Donaghmore and Aghaloo Parish Priest

The funeral will take place on Monday of Rev Canon Michael Ward, retired PP, late of Donaghmore and Aghaloo.

He passed away peacefully at his residence on Friday.

Canon Ward was born on January 17th, 1917, in the Parish of Carrickmore.

He studied at St Patrick’s College, Armagh, and spent two years (1934-36) in St Patrick’s College, Maynooth.

Religious studies continued from 1936-1941 in the Pontifical Irish College in Rome.

On April 12th, 1941, he was ordained in the Basilica of St John Lateran, Rome.

After serving as a curate in Magherafelt; Cooley and Derrynoose, Fr Ward was appointed Parish Priest of Aghaloo in 1973. Nine years later he was appointed a member of the Metropolitan Chapter (Canon).

The same year, 1982, Canon Ward was appointed Parish Priest of Donaghmore, a post he held until 1995. He remained Pastor Emeritus (residing in Donaghmore).

Requiem Mass for Canon Ward will be celebrated at 1.00pm in the Church of the St John the Baptist, Galbally.

Burial will take place afterwards in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Donaghmore.
