Derelict Burn Road property falls foul of latest ‘deliberate’ fire in Cookstown

Two crews of fire fighters were called out last night [Tuesday] to deal with the second ‘deliberate’ fire at a disused property in Cookstown in recent weeks.

Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service [NIFRS] said they dispatched two fire appliances after someone called the fire in at 9.24pm.

The blaze, which took hold of the two story dilapidated commercial premises on the Burn Road, is thought to have been started ‘deliberately’ and has been passed to the PSNI for investigation.

A spokesperson for NIFRS told the Mail: “Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service received a call at 9.24pm to a report of a fire at derelict commercial premises at the Burn Road area of Cookstown last night [Tuesday 26 May].

“Two Fire Appliances from Cookstown Fire Station were deployed to the scene of a fire at a derelict two storey building in the area. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus helped to extinguish the fire.

“The incident finished at 9.48pm and early indications would suggest the fire was started deliberately. The incident has now been passed through to the Police Service of Northern Ireland.”
