Commending her 35 years with the Sunday School as a ‘magnificent achievement’, the Dean, Very Rev Dr William Morton, noted that over 20 of those years had been spent as Superintendent, and he said it had been a role in which she had shown tremendous dedication and commitment coupled with dynamism and energy.

“She always employs wonderful innovation and imagination in her work with the children and young people and, in what is an area of huge responsibility in terms of nurturing them in the faith, communicates the lessons, which each Sunday are related to the lectionary readings in Church, in an interesting and appealing way for young minds,” he said.

Muriel Hamilton, People’s Churchwarden, also commended Irene on her service on behalf of the congregation.

“In recognising Irene’s remarkable achievement of involvement with the Sunday School for a period of 35 years, it was also noted that teaching and nurturing children from an early age is a very important part of church life.

“These children are prepared not only for the future but in the teaching and liturgy within the church family and to give them a sure and solid Christian foundation for their lives as young adults,” she said, adding: The dedication and commitment given by Irene to nurture and encourage the children in this valuable and worthwhile endeavour is an inspiration to everyone involved with the work of the Sunday School.”
