Gothic cabaret, musical murder at the Playhouse

HOW do you like your coffee? Greater Shantallow Community Arts/'Here We Go' Theatre Company and The Henry Girls will bring a slice of Gothic cabaret, musical murder and erotic horror to The Playhouse stage this weekend.

Based on a true story, "Bremen Freedom" is a pitch-black comedy about black coffee and the greatest black widow of them all, Geesche Gottfried.

Although considered a respectable, god-fearing businesswoman, Gottfried killed fifteen people in the city of Bremen and was eventually executed in 1831.

In Fassbinder's play, Geesche is fighting back against a world that denies women the right to think, act or feel for themselves.

In pursuing pleasure and destroying everyone who tries to oppress or exploit her, she becomes the ultimate femme fatale.

Geesche only wants to live and love on her own terms, but will all this murder make her happy? Sexy, provocative and outrageously funny, "Bremen Freedom" will shock, stimulate and entertain you more than any other show this year.

The cast of "Bremen Freedom" includes some of the Northwest's leading professional actors and newest talents, brought together in a series of workshops run by GSCA with the support of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the Department of Social Development.

The play is directed by renowned Australian Born but Londonderry bred thespian Matt Jennings.

"The evening begins with the hugely popular and internationally acclaimed Henry Girls presenting a selection of darkly beautiful music from around the world, from bluegrass murder ballads to gypsy torch songs, dirty blues to soul salvation," Oliver Green, artistic director of Greater Shantallow Community Arts said.

"We are truly delighted to be able bring so many of the Northwest's most talented artists together we hope that the Derry public come out in the droves to support what I'm sure will be remembered as another outstanding local production".

"Bremen Freedom" will come to The Playhouse on Saturday and Sunday June 19 and 20 at 8pm.
