Hat-trick of awards for Wallace students

For the third consecutive year a Wallace High School student has won the British Nutrition Foundation Drummond Education Award for CCEA GCSE Home Economics.

Allie Patterson’s superb achievement and good practice in GCSE Food and Nutrition was recognised in a ceremony at the Royal College of Physicians in London at the BNF Annual Day in November.

Debbie Wallace, Head of Home Economics, explained: “In the Home Economics department we passionately believe that every young person should have access to unbiased and accurate information about the relationship between diet and health to inform decisions that impact on our students’ health now and in the future.

“The British Nutrition Foundation plays a leading role in making this possible. Home Economics is in an ideal position to work with students to make nutrition meaningful and provide opportunities to put their knowledge and understanding into practice through making interesting and nutritious snacks and meals.

“Allie typifies many of our young people who have a deep interest in nutrition. We are so very proud that her dedication and hard work has resulted in this prestigious award; it is an outstanding achievement for Allie and the department.”

Winning the Drummond Education Award has become a family tradition for the Patterson family, after her sister won the award last year. “I am very aware how prestigious the award is, it is only awarded to one student from CCEA every year,” said Allie.

“I was surprised and shocked because the chances of a pupil from the same school winning this award not just two but three years in a row are very slim. I just couldn’t believe that two sisters from the same school have won the award two years in a row.

“Our Principal, Mrs O’Hare, my mum and I travelled to London on Tuesday November 17 to collect my award. The day was like a who’s who of the food and nutrition industry.

“Eminent professors from top universities and representatives from major food companies like Kellogg’s and Nestle were there. I was presented with my award by Mrs Joanne Denney-Finch OBE.

“After the ceremony we were treated to a four course lunch during which I had the opportunity to chat with the other guests about pursuing a career in nutrition.

“I had a brilliant day. I’d like to thank Miss Wallace and the Home Economics department for all their hard work in supporting and inspiring their students.”
