It was the result of a single-vehicle crash on Five Mile Straight Road, to the north of the town, between Maghera and Moneyneany.

Police were called to the scene at around 1.10pm today.

They initially said the incident was “serious”.

But later that night the death was confirmed.

The PSNI said: “The who sadly died was the driver of the vehicle.

“He has been named as Hugh Vincent McWilliams, aged in his 60s.”

Inspector Gavin Sterling said has said “enquiries are continuing and we would appeal to anyone with any information to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 956 14/08/20”.

Tonight, Derry GAA put out an announcement on its Twitter feed.

It read: “Derry GAA are devastated at the untimely death of Hugh McWilliams.

“Hugh was Managing Director of H&A Mechanical Services, our headline sponsor.

“He was unstinting in support and generosity for county, club and community.

“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.”

Another user, John Keenan (@tamniarnderry) wrote: “Hugh and Anne knew no boundaries to their generosity, we the beneficiaries have lost a genuine modest good person.

“May you rest in peace Hugh.”

A notice on the Funeral Times website said he was “beloved husband of Anne and loving father Maureen (Quinn) and Carlus, son of the late Peggy and Charlie”.

Funeral arrangements will follow later.

It added due to the coronavirus, the wake and funeral will be strictly private.
