The warning comes ahead of a BBC Spotlight programme about an adult website featuring images of schoolgirls from Northern Ireland schools.

In the letter sent to parents from headmaster Trevor Robinson, he said: “The BBC believes the pictures have been ‘stolen’ from social networking sites and posted online in an extremely inappropriate context.”

It’s understood the photos were taken in innocence and without any sexual intent or exploitation, and in them the girls are fully clothed in school uniform.

Mr Robinson added: “The BBC believes, and hopes that we agree, that this is a story that is very much in the public interest to cover - sharing and posting images of all kinds online is part of life for most teenagers now, and they think it is important to highlight how this can leave young people vulnerable.”

The BBC Spotlight programme airs this Tuesday night.
