Dexter Gordon is sensational in the lead role - he earned an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Dale Turner - and Herbie Hancock, who appears in the film, was nominated for his score.

Director Bertrand Tavernier beautifully captures the many joys and sorrows that encompass the jazz world.

Round Midnight is somewhat of a modern classic, having won an Oscar in 1987 for best original score, and having had its lead actor Dexter Gordon nominated for Best Actor in a leading role the same year.

The film promises to set the mood nicely for the other events over the bank holiday weekend, as the 9th City of Derry Jazz Festival comes to town.
