This means local people who would like to have a say on future care for the elderly must submit their comments before then.

The 14-week consultation period began in June, but Mid Ulster politicians and union bosses have both slammed proposals which could see 10 homes closed and elderly in the area forced to stay in either private homes, or home alone.

UNISON chief Dave Prentis flew into Belfast in August to lend his support to the fight.

“We will shame any government that attempts to trample over the rights of the most frail and vulnerable in our society,” he said.

Una Cunning, a director at the Northern Trust said: “There is still a small window of opportunity for people to provide their views.”

Consultation documents are on the Trust website: www.northerntrust.hscni.net/ or call 028 2766 1377.
