The court heard how an argument broke out between Jan Kele, who lives at Doury Grove in Ballymena, and the injured party between November 1-4, 2013 and that Kele had become “abusive and insulting”.

The prosecution said the defendant grabbed the woman by the arm saying: “Now whore, you will not be going anywhere. You will see what happens.”

They went on to say Kele then threw her against the wall, grabbed her round the neck, hit and slapped her, before adding: “Whore, you will see in a minute what will happen to you.”

The woman was reported to have suffered bruises to her face, arms and neck, some scratches and also had sore heads after the attack.

In Kele’s defence, counsel told the court his client disagreed with this account of the incident and that both a doctor and police had said medical reports and some evidence “contradicted what she said”.

He went on to say however, that the 39-year-old admitted slapping her, saying: “She hit him and in the heat of the moment he slapped her once.”

Dubbing the incident “one instance of stupidity” Judge White ordered Kele to pay his victim £150 and fined him £215 for the assault.
