Jason Scott (25), of Fairlea Heights, Moneymore, also received eight penalty points for having no insurance, taking the vehicle without authority, and failing to stop for police on January 31.

The court heard that at 2.25pm the attention of police on mobile patrol at Lawford Street, Moneymore, was drawn to the defendant who made off at speed.

A prosecuting lawyer said police turned and followed defendant who turned into Northland Road and then Northland Gardens, where he abandoned the vehicle.

She said Scott climbed over a fence and pulled up a hood over his head as he made off.

Police contacted the owner of the vehicle, defendant’s sister, who told police Jason had taken it without permission, the barrister explained.

Admitting the offences Donal Heron, solicitor, said Scott had “foolishly taken” the car and failed to stop for police because he knew he had no insurance for it.

Mr Heron said defendant’s sister had called him and, in fairness to him, he had gone back to meet the officers.
