Moneymore school girl impresses judges to win place in next round of BBC’s Junior Bake Off

Darcey Harkness appeared on episode eight of the show, which aired on November 11.

In the programme she impressed judges Allegra McEvedy and Graham Hornigold with her “determination”, and despite a small problem with her cake, was said to have “delivered on flavour” with both it and the “show stopping” biscuits she baked.

Talking about her love of baking on the CBBC website, the 12-year-old said: “I usually go a bit wild in and don’t always stick to a recipe for my cake.

“I am in the kitchen quite a bit. During [the] school week my mum and dad limit it down to once or twice a week, but during the school holidays I’ll always be in the kitchen.”

She said he was taught to bake by “the best” - her granny who was a school cook - and credited granny’s recipe with getting her this far.

One of her three competitors on the show said: “I really think Darcey deserved to win.”

While Cookstown’s Hub congratulated the “one to watch” on its Facebook site.
