Death of patron a sad loss to town clubs

JOE Smylie, Patron of Lurgan Rugby Football and Cricket Club, died on Monday morning. He was 93.

A club stalwart for many years he took a huge interest in both sections of the Pollock Park club.

Development Officer, Graeme Hunter, said Joe had been involved in the club for most of his life.

“I have many fond memories of him down the years,” said Graeme. “He did a huge amount of work around the club. It’s a sad loss.”

Both on the playing and administration sides Joe was a tremendous influence.

“We won’t see his like again,” said Club President Alan Hunter. “He was the ultimate clubman who made an invaluable contribution for over 60 years and will be sorely missed.”

Joe is survived by his wife Elizabeth and son Robert.

His funeral service is today (Thursday) at 2.30pm in First Lurgan Presbyterian Church with cremation on Friday morning in Roselawn Crematorium.

The family have asked that donations, in lieu of flowers, be made to the Tigers Section, Lurgan Rugby Football and Cricket Club, c/o Malcomson’s Funeral Service, 7 Robert Street, Lurgan.
