Lifelong resident of Loughbrickland

Mr Russell, who lived at Greenan Road in the village, had been battling cancer when he died on Sunday, April 28.

The dearly loved son of Mrs Margaret Russell and the late Mr Bertie Russell, he had been brought up in Loughbrickland where he attended the local primary school before moving to Banbridge High School.

He left school when he reached the age of 16 and went to work in Armaghdown Creamery where he was employed for 26 years. After leaving Armaghdown Creamery he took ill and was diagnosed with cancer.

Mr Russell loved to be about his home and he took a great interest in his garden. He also enjoyed travelling, especially on cruises, and he had been to many countries throughout the world.

A member of Loughbrickland Boys’ Brigade, he spent many years in the organisation and in his spare time enjoyed attending vintage fairs, playing pool and socialising with friends.

He is survived by his mother Margaret and sisters Valerie, Wendy and Shirley and several nephews and nieces. To these and all other relatives sincere sympathy has been extended.

The funeral took place from his home to Loughbrickland Presbyterian Church where the packed church heard his minister, the Rev. Patricia McBride, pay a fitting tribute to Maurice’s life.

The hymns ‘Will Your Anchor Hold’ and ‘Amazing Grace’ were sung and Mr William Chambers presided at the organ. Interment took place afterwards in Glascar Presbyterian Churchyard.

Floral tributes were placed on the grave and donations in lieu of flowers are being sent to William Bell and Co. Funeral Directors, 23 Kenlis Street, Banbridge, BT32 3LR for The Cancer Centre Belfast City Hospital.
