One Fine Day at Playhouse

LOCAL director Carmel McCafferty will return to The Playhouse this month with a hilarious play about the hazards of modern parenting.

A unique one man show preformed by local actor Deigh Reid, ‘One Fine Day’ by Dennis Lumborg will come to The Playhouse on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 May at 8pm.

In this razor-sharp monologue-styled play Eddie, a young metal worker, who lives contentedly on a suburban housing estate with his wife Jeanie and two adored small children, tells his story.

He and Jeanie have always believed in being frank with their children about matters of sex, but when his daughter stumbles into their bedroom during her parents’ love-making and then cheerfully recounts the details next day at school, Eddie finds himself investigated by social services.

Voluntarily exiling himself from home, he finds life without his family unbearable. He decides to “kidnap” his children for a day’s outing to the beach but it goes awry when Katie’s little school friend turns up unexpectedly. Arrested, he is finally released without charge and is restored to his family, but must then suffer the vilification of neighbours and workmates, until Jeanie finds a solution.

Well known actor and now director Carmel McCafferty is a long standing member of Londonderry’s drama scene, and a member of the city’s famous ‘71 players.

She performed roles in major productions such as ‘Máire - A Woman of Derry’, ‘Springtown Camp’’ and ‘Butterfly of Killybegs’ and boasts many credits as a director with ‘Me Da’s suit’, ‘The Kings of the Kilburn High Road’ and the musical ‘Ebenezer – A Christmas Carol’. She is also now recognised as a prolific theatre writer.

Actor Deigh Reid said he was delighted to be working with Carmel on this new play.

“I have been working with Carmel since 1994 and it’s aways very humbling to be working with someone as talented as Carmel. We’re very excited to get together and work on such a funny and moving play” he said.

Deigh, who has directed several plays himself with Marvel Arts Theatre Company, including Sam Cree’s Wedding Fever’ and ‘Affluence’, has also announced that this will be his last acting role.

“Like most people I have kind of fallen into directing, and I enjoy is so much that I want to concentrate on just that” he said.
