Footballers help NI Hospice get closer to fundraising goal

Lardy Lads and 2nd BB Old Boys have scored a few goals in their time, but last month they scored for the Hospice ‘Buy a Brick Appeal’ by organising a charity football match.

The event raised £1,576.25 for the appeal. And with further funds expected to be raised from a forthcoming day at the races, the teams hope to reach their target of £2,000.

John Phillips, community fundraiser with the charity said: “NI Hospice is encouraging sports clubs and community organisations that promote physical activities to raise a minimum of £100 each which will go towards funding the new build at Somerton Road. Taking part in the challenge will also enable clubs to spread the message that the NI Hospice cares for patients both in the inpatient unit and in their own homes across Northern Ireland.”

Deane Ferris of Lardy Lads commented: “As a group we have been supporting local charities since we were formed. We were delighted to be given the opportunity to help the Hospice in what it is trying to achieve. By having a fundraising event, we feel we have donated much needed funds which will put something back into the community to help a charity that is very close to a lot of our players and backroom staff.”

John added: “A state-of-the-art hospice facility is planned for the current site at Somerton Road, but to make that happen we need to raise £3million of which we have raised £2.2million. The support for our Buy a Brick Campaign from local individuals and organisations is very much appreciated and will help us create a solid foundation for hospice care in Northern Ireland.”
