Larne Choral Society holds movie-themed concert

The theme was ‘Friday night is movie night’ and the capacity audience was entertained by the choir as well as guest artists Killyglen Accordion Orchestra and soloist Nathan Johnston.

The choir was ably conducted by Elaine Hawthorne and accompanied by Hannah Copes, opening the evening with Let’s go to the movies.

This was followed by Pure Imagination and You’ll never walk alone, intertwined with Climb every mountain, all of which were warmly received by the audience.

Local schoolboy Nathan Johnston entertained the audience with haunting renditions of Panis Angelicus and Silent worship which were greeted with rapturous applause.

Killyglen Accordion Orchestra, under the expert baton of David Hawthorne, and fresh from retaining its UK championship trophy, entertained everyone with African Funk, Starlight and A man’s a man for all that.

The choir then completed the first part of the concert by singing When you believe, skilifully singing the Hebrew part of the song.

The choir’s performance of Hail Holy queen from Sister Act started solemnly but developed into a foot-tapping piece which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

The choir started the second part of the concert with You’ve got a friend in me, I see the light and the Wells Fargo wagon.

Nathan Johnston then entertained the audience with a rendition of Electricity from Billy Elliot and Old-time rock and roll.

Elena Aceves-Cully then played classical guitar, followed by Killyglen Accordion Orchestra’s performance of Liberty bell and a medley from West Side Story.

The evening was drawn to a conclusion by the choir singing the ‘Ashokan farewell’ and ‘An American trilogy,’ with both pieces receiving loud applause from the audience.

Larne Choral Society would like to thank First Larne Presbyterian Church for the use of their facilities and John Shannon from Inver garden centre, who decorated the hall beautifully.

They also wish to thank the ladies of the choir who provided a delicious supper and Billy Burns, who introduced the acts and amused everyone with his humour.

In addition, the choir would like to thank its former accompanist Gwen Dick, who will be sorely missed, for her hard work and dedication over the years as well as Hannah Copes who played beautifully.

Larne Choral Society meets on Tuesday evenings at 7.45 pm in Craigyhill Methodist Church and new members would be most welcome.
