Members have also confirmed their commitment to supporting a global intercity event in autumn 2017 to help promote organ donation.

During a presentation to the committee by representatives from the Western Health and Social Care Trust’s Organ Donation Committee, plans were outlined to participate in the event which will centre around the choreographed unveiling of stone sculptures across the world to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the first heart transplant operation in 1967.

Karen McFarland, council’s director of Health and Communities, said the local authority is committed to supporting the Trust and being involved in this exciting project.

“St Columb’s Park is a place of beauty and tranquillity and a perfect setting for the new sculpture,” she said.
