17. James McIlroy
Larne runner, James McIlroy BEM, was recognised in the New Year’s Honours list 2022 for services to athletics in Northern Ireland. Following a glittering track career, James has been central in pushing to new levels the half marathon which now draws elite participants to the Antrim coast. He competed in British (five titles), Irish (four titles) and European Championships and was a European Cup winner (1500m). His talent took him to the Commonwealth Games on three occasions and the Sydney Olympics. 20. Keith Gillespie
Former Northern Ireland player Keith Gillespie was born in Larne before moving to Bangor as a child. He was on the books of Manchester United between 1993 and 1995, making nine appearances for the Old Trafford club. He made the move to Newcastle United in 1995, going on to play over 100 times for the North East side. He also played for a number of other clubs including Blackburn Rovers, Leicester City, Sheffield United and Glentoran. He made his debut for Northern Ireland in 1994, going on to make over 80 appearances for the national team before earning his last cap in 2008.
