There are many famous people from Lurgan, Co Armagh, from the sporting world to music and the world of science and technology.
Some of those include Jay Beatty, footballer and manager, Neil Lennon, Len Ganley, Barry Douglas, Archbishop Michael Jackson as well as William Paul Duprex who started scientific research by testing saliva of his Lurgan school friends.
Comedians Micky Bartlett and William Caulfield, as well as Lord Chief Justice Brian Kerr and Michael Deeny the 'Godfather of Irish Music' who brought the Horslips to the international stage.
13. Sgt Beckett saved many colleagues in Levant after a refuelling tank servicing a Lancaster plane went on fire
Sgt John Archibald Beckett was born on 14 March 1906 in Lurgan. He was the son of Samuel Nicholl Beckett and Elizabeth Swanton Beckett. Beckett joined in the Royal Air Force in or around January 1935. On 28 March 1947 at Air Headquarters in the Levant, Beckett was the driver of a refuelling vehicle which was refuelling a Lancaster.. Suddenly, a fire broke out in the vehicle's pumping compartment; flames enveloped Sergeant Beckett and set alight the front of the Lancaster's fuselage. Another airman beat out the flames on Beckett but not before the latter had sustained very severe burns on the hands and face. Fearing that the main tank of the refuelling vehicle would explode, Beckett got into the driver's seat of the blazing vehicle and drove it 400 yards to a point where it could do no further damage. Beckett then collapsed and he was taken hospital but he died of his injuries on 12 April 1947. He was posthumously awarded the George Cross Photo: Unknown
14. Dr Hamilton was part of mediation work during trouble times
Former Presbyterian Moderator, Rev Dr Thomas Norman Hamilton was born in Lurgan on 6 October 1946. He was brought up in First Lurgan Presbyterian Church and was educated at Portadown College graduating with a BA from Trinity College Dublin in 1969. He was Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland from June 2010 - June 2011. He has also been minister of the Ballysillan Presbyterian Church in Belfast for twenty-four years. In 2001, Dr Hamilton first came to wider public prominence during the Holy Cross school dispute in Ardoyne where children ran through a gauntlet of sectarian abuse from loyalist protesters however, mediation work led by Dr Hamilton and Holy Cross Passionist priest Fr Aidan Troy helped calm tensions and bring the distressing episode to an end. 15. Pat played for Manchester United and has 7 caps for Northern Ireland
Pat McGibbon, from Lurgan, Co Armagh, is a former professional footballer. McGibbon began his career at his local team Portadown FC, signing a professional contract with them in 1991, aged just 18. A year later, he was signed by Manchester United for £100,000. He made his debut for the Red Devils in a League Cup tie against York City in September 1995. He has also played for Swansea, Wigan, Scunthorpe United and Tranmere Rovers and Glentoran. He won seven caps for the senior Northern Ireland team between 1995 and 2000. manager of Newry City, from March 2011 until his resignation in July 2012. He had previously been assistant manager at Monaghan United and manager of his hometown team Lurgan Celtic. 16. Harry Hamilton plays sell out gigs across Ireland and the UK with his band Flash Harry
Harry Hamilton, otherwise known as the front man for Queen tribute band Flash Harry, is from Lurgan. Portraying an uncanny resemblance to Freddie Mercury, Harry has been fronting the band for more than 26 years selling out concerts across Ireland north and south. Harry, son of Trixie Hamilton a famous musician and singer who played for Elvis Presley, also works as a project manager with the NI Food and Drink Association. Harry suffered a heart attack a number of years ago and had major surgery. But despite that, he is back on the road playing with the band. Photo: Contributed
