Ballyronan: Plans for Lough Neagh environmental education and community facility at Traad Point

A planning application has been lodged for the construction of an environmental education and community facility at Traad Point, off the shore of Lough Neagh at Ballyronan.

The application, relating to a former Ulster University freshwater laboratory site at Point Road, was lodged on August 6 by McLean & Forte Architects Ltd, Belfast, on behalf of Mid Ulster District Council.

A Habitat and Management Plan was submitted by WM Associates EcologyNI.

The report states: “Mid Ulster District Council owns and manages the site of the former Ulster University Limnology Laboratory at Traad Point.

“The area is now part of a local nature reserve. The development of the site in implementation of the Outscape Traad Point Masterplan of May 2025 is now being proposed.

“The programme of works includes some development and construction options which will require Planning consent.

“The Habitat Creation and Management Plan (HCMP) has been prepared to guide the long-term management and enhancement of habitats within Traad Point Local Nature Reserve.

“The Plan supports Mid Ulster District Council’s objectives for biodiversity conservation, environmental education, research and sustainable site management.

“The Plan establishes a framework through which the biodiversity value of the Local Nature Reserve can be enhanced and maintained in favourable condition, whilst supporting appropriate educational and community use of the site.

“It is intended to be enacted in parallel with an Invasive Species Management Plan (ISMP) compiled by EcologyNI Ltd.

“Traad Point is already a site of considerable biodiversity value, and management should focus upon enhancement of existing ecological assets rather than replacement of habitats.

“The site is currently undergoing natural succession from open habitats towards scrub and woodland. Without intervention, this process will continue, resulting in the progressive loss of species-rich grassland, open wetland margins and early successional habitats.

“The greatest biodiversity gains are likely to arise from maintaining and restoring a diverse habitat mosaic rather than promoting any single habitat type.

“Habitat restoration and management should be undertaken in parallel with the Invasive Species Management Plan, which includes a long-term process to eradicate Himalayan Balsam.

“Habitat management should support the site’s role as a local nature reserve, environmental education resource, ecological research facility and community asset.

“The long-term vision for Traad Point is the development and maintenance of a diverse habitat mosaic characteristic of the north-western shores of Lough Neagh.

“The plan will target interconnected areas of species-rich acid grassland, semi-natural grassland, wetland, swamp, woodland edge, wet woodland, birch woodland, ponds, shoreline habitats and early successional sandy habitats.

“Together these habitats will support a diverse assemblage of plants, invertebrates, birds, bats, amphibians and other wildlife, whilst contributing to the ecological resilience of the wider Lough Neagh landscape.”

The proposed Trad Point Education Centre facility includes a multi-purpose hall, a lobby, shared office space, storage facilities, a kitchen, toilet facilities, and an outdoor area.
