'Be a Chorister for the Day' event at St Patrick’s Church of Ireland Cathedral, Armagh

Musical boys aged 7 to 15 years old and girls aged 11 to 18 years old are invited to attend a ‘Be a Chorister for the Day’ event at St Patrick’s Church of Ireland Cathedral, Armagh on Saturday, October 3.

The Cathedral has had a choir for hundreds of years and more young people are invited to join.

Prospective choristers, accompanied by their parents, are invited to attend either the morning session from 10.00am to 12.00pm or the afternoon session from 2.00pm to 4.00pm on the day. The event is free of charge and no musical experience is necessary.

Dr Stephen Timpany, the Cathedral’s Organist and Master of the Choristers, commented, “Our ‘Be a Chorister for the Day’ event is like a school Open Day when the Cathedral will open its doors to interested families to see behind the scenes. As well as exploring the beautiful Cathedral, participants will engage in a singing workshop, sing with some of our present choristers and have a chance to try on choir robes.”

Stephen continued, “Being a chorister is a wonderful experience for a young person and opens up so many musical and non-musical opportunities, and those who sing in choirs are proven to be more academically successful than others. Sometimes parents are reluctant for their children to commit to choir membership due to an already busy family life, however, we would invite them to give their child the chance to see if they will thrive in this environment.”

Parents are invited to register their interest for the event by contacting Stephen by e-mail: [email protected] or by telephoning the Cathedral on 028 37523142.
