The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, Ald John Smyth, praised the dedicated NHS staff.

The DUP representative said: “We are all in very uncertain times at the minute and everyone is worried about themselves and their families. There has been huge disruption across the world and we feel that impact right here in our households and communities. Local businesses are suffering, services have been affected and children’s education is severely interrupted.

“Throughout all this upheaval, one thing remains constant. That is the commitment, dedication and professionalism of our NHS and healthcare staff. We know that work is happening right here in the heart of our borough, both in the hospitals and in the community and these workers deserve our gratitude.

“So tonight at 8pm, I urge you to stand together as a community, open your doors and join your neighbours, at a safe distance, and show your thanks to these heroes with a round of applause.

“Please help to protect our vital NHS, and save lives by obeying the Government instructions and staying at home.”

Ahead of the effort, a spokesperson for Mid and East Antrim Borough Council encouraged residents to back the initiative.
