Grandfather raises close to £3,000 for STEPS charity

A Moneymore grandad has raised almost £3,000 from a sponsored cycle for STEPS, the Draperstown-based mental health charity.

Danny McStravock completed a ‘Dawn to Dusk’ cycle totalling some 189 miles and raised a total of £2,979.93 which will also go towards raising awareness of mental health issues.

The former civil servant recently handed over a cheque for this amount to Karen McGuigan, of STEPS.

The 61-year-old is married to Martina and has four children and three grandchildren. Last year he quit smoking and celebrated his 60th birthday by undertaking a 225-mile cycle to raise money for Cancer Focus Northern Ireland. He cycled the 189 miles on September 12.

He said: “I wish to thank the members of Creggan Wheelers who not only made donations but also joined me for two laps of the 25 mile circuit.

“To Ally, Claire and Clara from Ballymena Leisure centre for all your help over the winter at the spin classes and in the Gym. To my nephew Ciaran McCann CMC Fitness for your weight training program To my son in law Sammi thanks for being there for the last two laps it was great to have company especially when the weather turned nasty. To my mechanic Paul Brooks who always keeps me on the road.

“Last but not least, to my family where would I be without you when I decide to do a challenge you all get behind me and for that I’m truly grateful whether it was manning the support vehicle, providing food stops, whatever was needed.”
