Lisburn woman Stacey Burns, who is competing in this year’s Miss Belfast heat of the prestigious Miss Great Britain contest, has put her best foot forward to raise vital funds for charity.

As part of her campaign in the Miss Great Britain Belfast competition, Stacey challenged herself as a complete non-athlete to run 15 5k runs in 15 weeks, to raise funds for Cancer Research UK and Alex’s Wish.

"I was always the child that came last every sports day, that no one wanted on their team in PE, so this really was an intimidating undertaking,” Stacey admitted.

"I’m delighted to report that, at the end of the 15 week challenge period, I actually exceeded my own expectations and, after finishing the Cancer Research UK Race for Life, completed 17 5k runs and raised a total of £500 – £300 for CRUK and £200 for Alex’s Wish.”

It wasn’t all plain sailing for Stacey but she is justifiably proud of herself for completing the challenge,

"There were absolutely periods of the challenge that I doubted myself and my motivation, in fact, there were low points within each individual run,” she continued.

"But I reminded myself how lucky and grateful I am to be strong and healthy enough to attempt a 5k run, and that would remind me that I was doing this for something bigger than myself, to raise the essential funds needed to help other people.

This time last year, I never would have thought I would have completed this challenge, but now the Saturday morning ParkRun has become such a solid part of my routine, that I actually plan to keep them on.”

Stacey would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported her during the challenge.

"I would like to thank everyone who very generously donated, I understand that times are tough for a lot of people so I’m very grateful for every individual contribution,” she said.

"I would also like to thank everyone who supported me on my runs, especially my friend Abbie Parkinson, who was by my side encouraging me for the majority of the runs, my partner Christopher, plus all of the amazing runners at Stormont ParkRun who created a safe and welcoming environment for me to complete this challenge.”
