The small portion of land where the prefabricated stand will be built is located adjacent to the existing Greenisland FC clubhouse

Northern Ireland heroes Jonny and Corry Evans and Craig Cathcart previously were on the club’s books before embarking on careers in English football, including spells by all three at Manchester United.

The redevelopment of the site was identified as a key objective by the Greenisland Regeneration Group a team made up of elected, community and statutory representatives.

Just last year the club opened a state-of-the-art 3G football pitch after receiving an investment of more than £800k.

The facilities not only host the footballers, but act as a sports hub for the entire community.

The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Peter Johnston, said: “This is fantastic news for Greenisland Football Club and the wider football fraternity.

“We have some of the best sporting facilities within Mid and East Antrim and this addition will only enhance the borough and the Greenisland area specifically.

“I look forward to seeing the work commence on the new stand.”

The stand will be constructed upon a base approximately 1.2m above ground level which will ensure supporters achieve adequate views onto the pitch.

The Deputy Mayor, Cllr Andrew Wilson, said: “Greenisland FC has a track record of developing high quality football talent and their facilities will hopefully allow them to attract even more top prospects.”

Knockagh Cllr Noel Williams said he was delighted to see the planning application approved by council last week.

Cllr Williams said: “I was particularly delighted to propose the approval of the Greenisland Football Club covered stand. I have no doubt that many a parent, or supporter, will use these enhanced facilities at what is one of the best soccer clubs in the country.”
