Cookstown Ulster Unionist Party councillor Trevor Wilson set to retire from local politics after almost 40 years

Cookstown Ulster Unionist Party Councillor Trevor Wilson has announced his retirement after almost 40 years in local politics.

The Mid Ulster District Council member said he made the decision after giving the matter “careful consideration”, and he will step down from his role as councillor at the end of his current term in May 2027.

"This is a decision I actually made when I stood for election in 2023. I felt then that, in time, the right thing would be to make way for the next generation, and I believe that the time is now right to honour that decision,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

“I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank everyone who has voted for and supported me over the years. It has been a privilege to represent the people of Cookstown and to serve our community.

“I also want to thank my UUP officers, colleagues and fellow party members for their support and encouragement throughout my time as a Councillor. There are many others I need to mention which I will do at a later date.”

Councillor Wilson stressed he could not have done the job without support from his family.

“Most importantly however, I want to thank my family. Their encouragement and belief in me have never wavered and I could not have undertaken this journey without them,” he continued.

“While I have made the decision to retire, until I step down in 2027 it will be business as usual. I will continue to work hard for the people of Cookstown, representing their interests and delivering on the responsibilities entrusted to me.

“Looking ahead, I would ask everyone who has supported me and the UUP over the years to give their support and encouragement to Jay Basra, a young, enthusiastic and committed UUP member. I believe it is important that we encourage and support the younger generation as they step forward to serve our community.

“I am proud of what we have achieved, grateful for the friendships and experiences along the way and I look forward to continuing to serve the people of Cookstown until May 2027. Thank you to everyone who has been part of the journey.”
