Derry Nationalist Party members outside Guildhall in the mid-1960s

This old photograph from the archives of the ‘Derry Journal’ shows some of the leading lights in the Nationalist Party in Derry in the 1960s.

On the far left of the photo is Paddy Friel - father of renowned playwright, Brian - who, prior to entering active politics was a well-known schoolteacher in both Co. Tyrone and Derry.

Third from left is well-known Derry businessman James Doherty and, in front of him, is James Hegarty, who, in the 1970s, was elected Mayor of Derry. At back (wearing the glasses) is Eugene O’Hare, a local chemist and master bridge player.

Standing to the right is local GP Dr Jim McCabe, who was a member of Derry Corporation for a period.
