MLA disappointed that the Executive has no concrete plans for the development of the former Maze prison site

Ms Eastwood asked the Office of the First and Deputy First Minister for an update on the development of the 347 acre site.

The Maze Long Kesh Development Corporation was established on June 1, 2011 and a new board was appointed in October 2023 however little progress has been made on the plans for the future of the extensive site in Lisburn.

“The Maze Long Kesh site has huge potential and we have been promised major regeneration and economic projects for years,” said Ms Eastwood. “It is now time to deliver on that potential.

"Since the Assembly has been back, I and party colleague David Honeyford, have been asking questions of the Executive Office, the Economy Committee, and the new Chief Executive of Invest NI, to ensure it is one of their priorities.

"The initial response I received back from my written question to the Executive Office was disappointing as it showed no concrete plans, but I will continue pushing.”

Ms Eastwood continued: "The site sits on the corridor between Belfast and Dublin, with easy access to ports, public transport and road networks across the island and given dual market access there is increased economic significance.

"It could be a hub for specialised skills and training, logistics, research and development, bringing opportunities and jobs, as well as providing space for the community.

"The MLK Development Corporation, an arm’s length body of the Executive office, was established in 2011 and we have seen some things happening like the Balmoral show, Ulster Aviation Society, and the Eikon Exhibition Centre, but MLK needs to be central to the economic future of Northern Ireland.”

In response to her question, the office of the First and Deputy First Minister stated: “A new board was appointed on October 30, 2023.

"We recognise the potential of the site and look forward to working with the new Board to see the site developed and its regeneration taken forward.”

According to the Maze Long Kesh Development Corporation: “Maze Long Kesh has the potential to generate 5,000 jobs, deliver more than £300m investment and become a global ‘best in class’ project with social and economic regeneration at its core.”
