Scarva man jailed for 10 years and put on sex offenders register

Jailing 39-year-old Jason Paul Magill at Newry Crown Court, Judge Patricia Smyth warned Magill that as she had deemed him to be a serious dangerous to the public and specifically children, she was imposing an “extended sentence” which means it will be up to the Parole Commissioners if and when he is safe to release.

She told Magill, that even when he is released, he will be under a supervised licence for five years.

Magill of Moody Park was convicted of on 26 offences in April. He was found guilty of six offences of inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, three of possessing indecent images of children, six counts of causing a child to watch a sexual act, five of making threats to kill the three boys and their mother, five counts of sexually assaulting two of the children and one offence of sexually grooming his nine-year-old victim.

Magill was found not guilty of three further charges of sexually assaulting his 10-year-old victim.

Judge Smyth revealed that Magill has shown no sympathy or no remorse.

Quoting from the pre-sentence probation report, the judge said Magill claimed he “could not see how, on any view, the behaviour was inappropriate”.

Judge Smyth added that her view was that Magill had “set out to corrupt their young minds and to sexually assault their young bodies.”

The Judge said the victims had suffered significant trauma which was only added to by Magill’s continued protestations of innocence which meant that all three had to undergo the ordeal of giving evidence in court.

She ordered Magill to sign the police sex offenders register “for life,” banned him from working with children and also imposed a ten year Sexual Offences Prevention Order.

Magill is barred from living anywhere without approval, having unsupervised contact with children, entering a relationship where his partner has children and from loitering near child centred facilities.
