Scouts and community group to unite for The Big Autumn Clean-Up in Carrickfergus

A scout group is teaming up with local residents in Carrickfergus for this year's Big Autumn Clean-Up in the town.

South East Antrim District Explorer Scouts along with Woodburn and Sunnylands Community Development Group are taking part in the event aimed at tackling litter and boosting civic pride.

The initiative is supported by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, which is providing resources for the volunteers.

The Big Autumn Clean-Up takes place on Saturday, October 21 from 1pm until 5pm and will cover Hawthorn Avenue, Ashleigh Park, Willow Park, Elmwood Park, Beech Drive and Cedar Park.

The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, Councillor Paul Reid, said: “It is fantastic to see young people and residents committing to making their Borough an even more beautiful place to live in.

“This clean-up activity will hopefully give them a real sense of civic pride for the area and encourage people not to litter.

“I would like to thank all of those who have pledged their support.

“They are doing their bit to make Carrickfergus more attractive for all the community as well as visitors to the area and tourists.

“We are a multi-award winning Borough when it comes to our public spaces and initiatives like this are crucial to ensuring Mid and East Antrim remains an attractive place to live, work, invest in and visit.

“Regular community clean-ups and social events which include participation from across the age spectrum ensure community inclusion, a sense of belonging and a pride of place.

“Council is committed to encouraging partnership work which ultimately makes a real difference to our citizens’ lives.”

Residents and local workers have been asked to park vehicles in Planet Bingo’s car park during the clean-up in order for the Council’s sweeper to gain access to the streets affected.
