Mr Durkan said: “More than forty years ago people took to the streets for ‘One Person One Vote’.

As we face into this year’s Assembly election and the upcoming referendum on EU membership it is vital people are on the electoral register so that they can exercise this right.

“With thousands of voters in Derry and throughout the North still missing from the electoral register, I am delighted to join the NUS, Electoral Commission and the Bite the Ballot campaign in encouraging, supporting and promoting the National Voter Registration Drive.

“We also need to see more government action in relation to modernising the electoral register – including recommendations from last year’s report by the Political and Constitutional Reform Select Committee on online voting, registering on the day of an election and the need to create a more engaged and inspired younger electorate in particular.

“Staff at the Electoral Office are happy to check if people are on the electoral register. You can check to see if you are registered by phoning the helpline on 0800 4320 712 or by visiting www.nidirect.gov.uk/registering-to-vote for further information. You can also call into their office at 20A Queen Street or my constituency office at 23 Bishop Street for advice.

“I would urge everyone to get on the electoral register as soon as possible. Indeed, this is key to having your say on important issues which affect your everyday lives.”
