Sinn Fein call for bilingual Irish/English street signs in Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon

Deputy Mayor, Paul Duffy has called on the Council to adopt a bilingual street language policy.

The Deputy Mayor said: “The Council have a number of requests in from communities seeking their street signage to be displayed in Irish and English.

“To date the council has failed in its statutory duty to facilitate these requests.

Cllr Duffy said: “The Council must now fulfill its duties and facilitate bilingual signage as citizens will not be ignored any longer and legal solutions will be sought.”

Independent Cllr David Jones branded the comments a ‘pre election publicity stunt’ saying they have no ‘concern to the many migrants now residing in many parts of the Borough but that matters little when your trying to appeal to your electorate.

“Remember this is the same party that holds NI to ransom by not returning to the Assembly making an Irish Language Act as one of the conditions.

“It matters not a jot to them the continuing hospital waiting lists, difficulty getting a GP appointment, pot holes on roads, education deficit of working class unionist community and other important issues. No doubt they will be seeking bi-lingual signs at the new Craigavon Leisure Centre as well.”
