Teenager caught at between 90 and 100mph on the Moneymore-Cookstown dual carriageway was showing off to friends

The youth, who cannot be identified, was fined £315 with five penalty points for careless driving, speeding and exceeding the 45mph limit for an ‘R’ driver.

District Judge Alan White said the youth was simply showing off to the other males in the car with him.

“This is the kind of driving that leads to fatalities on our roads,” he remarked.

Mr White said he would not impose a disqualification as he believed everyone was entitled to be given a chance in life, and in view of the references he had received.

The court heard at 10.45pm on December 9 last year police in a liveried vehicle were passed by the defendant’s car at Moneymore Road corner in Cookstown. A PPS lawyer said over a four-mile stretch of the dual carriageway police reached speeds of between 90 and 100mph.

He said police activated the blue lights but the defendant’s vehicle continued at speed, overtaking four vehicles on the dual carriageway and continued at speeds of around 50mph through Moneymore.

Counsel said on the Magherafelt Rd leaving Moneymore the youth’s car had to swerve around another car before being stopped by police.
