Teenagers take a selfie at top of 50 foot crane to boast to pals

The pair were brazen enough to take selfies at the top of the crane in a bid to boast to their pals.

Over 20 fire fighters were involved in the rescue which took place at around 8pm last Monday night.

The Times understands that the pair, aged 14 and 16, goaded firemen as they carried out the rescue, laughing at fire officers and stating that they could have got down themselves.

On social media, one of those involved posted pictures taken from the top of the crane stating ‘In case you don’t believe us, here is the proof.’

In one of the pictures the pair have taken a selfie with part of their faces covered up from the top of the crane.

The pictures show the terrifying distance the teenagers climbed to reach the top of the crane.

Five fire appliances were involved in the incident, three from Londonderry, including a specialist aerial appliance.

During the operation Hazelbank Road and Pates Lane were closed to traffic.

A Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Firefighters using the aerial appliance helped to rescue the two youths from the 50 foot high crane in the area.

“There were no reports of any injuries to either of the youths, as firefighters worked closely with our colleagues from Police Service of Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service during the incident.

“Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service finished at the scene at 10:26pm.”

Speaking after the incident, Group Commander Max Joyce warned of the dangers that the pair had put themselves in.

“I would use this opportunity to appeal to young people not to be climbing up onto cranes.

“It would be very easy for someone to slip and fall.

“It’s not a playground.”

On Wednesday, the PSNI confirmed in a statement to The Coleraine Times that no charges have been brought against the teenagers

DUP MLA Adrian McQuillan says he was ‘outraged’ to learn of the incident.

“This could have been a tragedy.

“Thankfully no one was injured, but just think of the time wasted by the emmergency services on something that was a prank.

“Our young people really need to think about the possible consequences of their actions.”
