That will be the day

By Rev. James Simms, Minister of Rasharkin Presbyterian Church

SO much of our earthly lives are governed, not by decades or years, but by days. So we have birthdays, schooldays, holidays, wedding days, and our calendar months are well stocked with weekdays.

Even every dog, so we are told, has its day.

The Bible has several important things to say about days. The first thing it tells us is that God created days. In the creation record of the book of Genesis we learn that “ God called the light Day and the darkness He called Night and the evening and the morning were the first day.” He also “ gave lights in the firmament of heaven to be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years”.

Therefore we should treasure each day that comes to us as a precious gift from a loving and wise God and use every day for His glory and live it to His praise.

Another thing that the Bible is very clear about is that for every single human being, our days on earth are allotted to us individually by God, even before we were formed in our mothers’ wombs . O how quickly the sand of our days is running through the

hourglass of time. As the great hymn writer Henry Francis Lyte wrote in his enduring hymn, Abide With Me, ‘ Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day.’ The Psalmist David prayed for the Lord to teach him to number his days that he might apply his heart unto wisdom. This is a prayer worth praying because none of us can count on tomorrow, for we do not know what a day may bring forth.

Something the Bible clearly insists on, is the importance of Today.

In the context of God speaking to us - and He most certainly is a communicating God- the Scriptures urge us several times with the words ,”Today if you hear His voice do not harden your hearts”

(Hebrews 3 v 8) Writing to the church in Corinth, the Apostle Paul exhorted his readers not to receive the grace of God in vain and stressed the vital importance of the present with the phrase, “Behold now is the accepted time, behold now is the day of salvation.” (2nd Corinthians 6 v 2) Today is God’s word. Tomorrow is the devil’s word. If today you hear God calling you to exercise faith in His Son Jesus Christ, do not delay to the hardening of your heart. Turn to the Saviour now, look in faith to Him alone for your salvation. He has promised to receive you and never turn away any who come to Him. Many souls before you have already trusted Christ. Their testimony is echoed in the hymn, ‘ O happy day that fixed my choice on Thee my Saviour and my God.’ It is a very special day no true Christian ever forgets, or ever regrets. Trust in the Lord today and you will find Him the same today and forever. I could close by telling you , as so many do, to have a nice day ! I would rather end by inviting you to have the best day of your life, the day of your conversion to Christ.
