Two men shaken after racist abuse and assault by gang of teenagers

Police are appealing for information following the report of the assault, which is being treated as a racist hate crime by police.

At approximately 11.45pm as the two men were walking through Waterloo Place a group of approximately 20 people, believed to be aged between 14 to 18, began following them shouting racial abuse. As the two men continued walking, one of them was assaulted. Later in Sackville Street a female member of this group assaulted this male again.

Both men were very badly shaken by their ordeal. Police would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact Police at Strand Road on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 1437 05/07/16.

This is being treated as a racially motivated hate crime.

Police investigating this incident have arrested an 18 year old male, who has been released pending a report to the PPS.
