5 gates on Walls near the Fountainto remain in place

THE five security gates on the Londonderry Walls near the Fountain estate remain locked overnight and will remain in place until residents want them removed.

Eleven out of sixteen other security gates around the historic Walls have been removed.

Additional CCTV has been put in place at a cost of £28k. UUP MLA Ross Hussey asked the Justice Minister David Ford what assurance he could give that “the security gates on Londonderry’s walls, close to the Fountain estate, will not be removed without the prior consent of residents and community leaders.”

Mr Ford replied: “There are five gates at the Walls in Derry that are locked overnight. These are adjacent to the Fountain Estate at Bishop Street.

“I can give an assurance that, in line with general practice, the views of residents and others will be sought should the future of these gates be considered.”
