Many dressed in traditional French or Spanish costumes and enjoyed a fun-filled day.

This included an hour long performance for parents during the morning, where each class showcased what they have been learning in Modern Language lessons.

A variety of multi-cultural activities were planned for the remainder of the day and the pupils sampled a selection of typical foods from each country.

The cook, Mrs Joanne O’Neill prepared an appetising menu (in English, French and Spanish) and all the catering staff entered into the spirit of the celebrations.

Mrs Maureen Smyth, Principal, thanked the whole school community for their enthusiasm and support.

She paid special tribute to Señora Michelle Días, the Spanish Tutor who works with P1 – P5 classes and the P2 teacher Miss Emma Funston who supports Spanish in KS2 classes.

Thanks were also extended to Mmslle Muriel D’Oria for all her hard work with pupils in KS2. Cumber Claudy Primary School prides itself as one of the few schools in the area where Spanish is taught from P1 right through to P7, and all pupils receive French tuition in Primaries 5, 6 and 7.

Mrs Smyth stated that this undoubtedly puts the pupils at an advantage over others when they are re-introduced to languages in post-primary schools.

Whilst Cumber Claudy Primary School certainly does not claim to produce multi-linguists, Mrs Smyth is convinced that exposing pupils to Modern Languages through fun lessons, songs and games helps lay the foundations for learning languages.

Hopefully this will open doors to a whole new world and offer exciting opportunities for some of our pupils.
