Eglinton new school work tostart by the end of this year

THE Western Education and Library Board (WELB) has informed neighbours of its plans to demolish Eglinton Primary School and build a modern eight classroom facility from December.

Neighbouring properties in the Woodvale Road and Cherry Drive area were sent letters notifiying them of the plans at the start of the week.

Meanwhile, Education Minister John O’Dowd has estimated that construction will get underway in December.

Asked for a progress update on 18 capital build projects announced in June 2012, he said the Eglinton build was nearly ready to go ahead.

Documentation for the new build behind the existing Primary School in Eglinton came through over March and April and the Minister said work was estimated to start at the end of this calendar year.

Other new school builds announced last June will take a little longer but not much.

According to the Minister the long-awaited co-location for Foyle College/Ebrington has an estimated construction start date of January 2014.

WELB is currently re-drafting certain documentation due to the addition of two special needs classrooms to the build.

The Belmont House new build is scheduled to start in May 2016.

According to the Minister: “WELB currently considering revised proposal to include merger between Belmont House and Foyleview Special Schools.

“This will change scope and size of project.”

And Rossmar’s new build in Limavady has an estimated construction start date of December 2015.

An appraisal for Rossmar should be with the Department of Education imminently if it isn’t already.

The Education Minister provided the details in response to an Assembly Question.
