Sick Magilligan prison officers missed 12 years in 2011

SICK prison officers at Magilligan collectively missed 12 working years and contributed to a £,3,460,079.18 sick pay bill across the prison service in 2011, it’s been revealed.

Justice Minister David Ford revealed that 173 prison officers in Magilligan were declared unfit for duty because of illness or injury in 2011, missing 4,608 working days between them.

The average number of days missed was 27 per prison officer.

Across the entire prison service sick pay cost the taxpayer over £3m.

Mr Ford explained: “The cost during that period to the Northern Ireland Prison Service in terms of Occupational Sick Pay was £3,460,079.18.”
