Walkers urged to climb a mountain for WaterAid

Over 2,000 walkers have already signed up to the challenge on June 8 with a fundraising target of £200,000 set to improve access to safe water and sanitation in Nepal.

The 200 peaks in the challenge have been selected by WaterAid supporters and include many in the Mourne mountain range which have proved popular with local walkers in the past.

Spokesperson for the charity, Anna McGuire, said the objective was to put a different team on top of 200 different mountains in the UK while raising much-needed cash to improve access to clean drinking water for Nepalese rural communities.

“The 200 peaks in the challenge have been selected by WaterAid supporters and include many in the Mourne mountain range close to Banbridge,” said Anna. “Teams can enjoy the stunning views from the summit of Slieve Donard, the highest peak in Northern Ireland, or tackle Slieve Lamagan - arguably the hardest climb of all the Mournes.

“By taking part in WaterAid 200 you can know that with every step, you are helping others to climb out of poverty by providing access to safe water and sanitation and reducing the time spent collecting water each day in one of the most mountainous regions of the world.”
