Wanted: John (Half-hanged) MacNaghten!

THE Playhouse will be holding open auditions this week in a bid to cast a new play based on the famed local tale of John (Half-hanged) MacNaghten.

From the pen of local playwright Stan McGowan, ‘The Wood of The Crows’ deals with the tragic events that led to the death of the young Prehen heiress Mary Ann Knox by the hand of her much older lover John MacNaughten in the year 1761.

The play, set against the background of Georgian Ascendency Londonderry will be directed by the author and will be preformed at the Playhouse from 15th to Saturday 20th November to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the tragedy.

Local actors interested in auditioning for roles are invited to attend the open auditions, which will be held in the playhouse this weekend (Saturday 18 June).

“The story of John (Half-hanged) MacNaghten has become the stuff of legend, a riveting story of obsession, forbidden love and heartbreak, the city’s very own Greek tragedy” Playhouse founding director Pauline Ross said.

“John McNaghten is earmarked in the local history books as the city’s most famous figure of 18th century romantic folklore. Stan’s captivating and distinctive look at local history in ‘The Tragedy at Dunkeer House’, which was also based upon another historical tragedy that took place in 1938 on the outskirts of the Donegal village of Carrigans, showed exactly how a legendary a local tale be brought back to life with true style and realism, and he’s set to do it again with this fascinating true story.”

The auditions will determine who will play the roles of John MacNaghten (age 40 years), Mary Ann Knox (17/18 years), Andrew Knox (50 years), Honoria Knox (50 years), George Knox (22 years) Angel Knox (60 years), James (Butler) (60 years). Ages are approximate.

Auditions will be held at The Playhouse on Saturday 18th June between 2.30pm and 4.30pm. Contact The Playhouse on (028)71 268027 to book your time.
