Wife of Royal Marine who established family home in Banbridge

Hester died at her home in High Field Gardens, Banbridge on Saturday, December 7.

She was the dearly loved wife of the late Windsor Gilchrist who predeceased her seven years ago. A woman of many sterling qualities she was the dearly loved mum of Michael and Myles.

She was working in the town’s shoe factory where she met and married Windsor. Windsor joined the Royal Marines and in the 1960s the couple lived abroad. When their son Michael was born in 1964, they returned home to Gilford in 1966 where their son Myles was born a year later. The family moved to Banbridge in 1970.

Hester enjoyed family life and was of a very sociable nature enjoying a good bit of chat. Her main interest was centred around her home and family and nothing delighted her more than to have them, and particularly her grandchildren. around her. She was a member of Holy Trinity Parish Church.

She is survived by her two sons Michael (Banbridge) and Myles (Lisburn), daughter-in-law Freda, grandchildren Jason, Karl, Jenna, Louis, Cameron and Oran. To these and all other relatives sincere sympathy has been extended.

The funeral which was largely attended took place from her home for public service in Holy Trinity Parish Church at which her minister, Archdeacon Roderic West, gave an inspiring address. He was assisted by the Rev. Rosie Diffin and Captain Geoffrey Walmsley. The hymns ‘The Old Rugged Cross’ and ‘How Deep The Father Love For Us’ were sung. Mr Roly Anketel presided at the organ.

Interment took place in the New Cemetery. Family flowers were placed on the grave and donations in lieu of flowers are being sent to William Bell and Co. Funeral Directors, 23 Kenlis Street, Banbridge, BT32 3LR for Cancer Research N.I. and Macmillan Nurses (Cheques made payable to William Bell and Co.).

William Bell and Co. had charge of the funeral arrangements.
