Work course benefitting young people

Foundation degree student Jonathan Scott from Lisburn, has recently completed an exciting one year’s work placement at Lisburn City Council.

Jonathan who studies the Sports, Exercise and Fitness foundation degree at South Eastern Regional College (SERC), secured the placement by applying through the council’s work 
experience website.

This highly selective process included two stages of review by the Council before awarding Jonathan a place to work as Sports Development Assistant in their Sports Development department.

Jonathan commented: “I was elated when I was chosen for the role and have gained very valuable work 
experience.

“The fact that the Foundation degree included a substantial work placement was what convinced me to enrol.

“I knew that if I could have an extended period working for an employer I would have a chance to work hard, prove my worth and impress them.

“I would recommend studying a Foundation degree to anyone thinking of returning to education.

“Once I complete the foundation degree I plan to progress to university.”

As the selected student, Jonathan received the opportunity to experience first-hand the role and responsibilities of a Sport Development Officer and get a better idea of how the business operates.During his time Jonathan was responsible for helping to organise a range of prestigious events including the Lisburn City Half Marathon and the European Gymnastics 
Championships.

Johnathan also got the unique opportunity to organise and manage his very own event, the Lisburn Triathlon.

A Foundation degree is a recognised Higher Education qualification and offers a progression route to an Honours degree at University.

SERC Principal and Chief Executive Mr Ken Webb explains: “Foundation degrees combine academic study with on-the-job experience developing students’ skills and career prospects whilst benefitting employers and their business.

“Employers are fully involved in the design, development and delivery of the courses. This means Foundation degree students graduate with a specialised set of skills that meet the specific needs of employers in a particular sector.”
