Young people inspired by photo and street art initiative in village

Recently they engaged a group of 14-17 year olds in a photography and street art project that was funded by the Arts Council.

Photographer, Tommy Vennard trained the group in basic photography skills for a number of weeks. During this time the group were asked to explore a particular issue that was important to them using photos.

The issues chosen were ‘division’ and ‘pollution’ and some of the resulting photos were impressive and are now on display in the youth centre.

At the mid-way point in the project the group were introduced to local street artist Dermot McConaghy who spent two days with the group designing and producing murals on the walls of the youth centre that represented some of the groups feelings around the issues of ‘music’ and ‘division’.

Youth worker, Neil Harrison said: “This project has not only transformed our youth centre visually but has also inspired the young people involved with new skills and interests that develop self-confidence. Huge thanks must go to Tommy and Dermot and of course the Arts Council for their support in this.”
