All eyes focused on new season

Lisnagarvey Hockey Club are now preparing for the season ahead, a season that sees both senior teams competing in the Ulster Premier League.

Garvey’s men’s first XI, having reached the KO16 of the European Hockey League last season are hoping to have a strong season in the Ulster Premier League and all Ireland competitions.

Under the guidance of new head coach, Errol Lutton, the pre-season in well underway and the squad has a great blend of youth and experience.

New players have been brought in to strengthen the squad including the talented Andy Williamson, international Jason Lynch and goalkeeper Stuart Chisholm.

RETURN

The ladies’ First XI return to the top flight of Ulster Hockey this season. Head coach Davy Allen has added Andrea Mockford from North Down, Emma McClurkin from Randalstown and Stefanie McCullough from Kilkeel to his panel as well as welcoming back Diane Topley.

The girls have been working incredibly hard during the close season and are readying themselves for a successful campaign.

Both First XIs will be in action at the inaugural Lisnagarvey Oyster Tournament during the first weekend of September.

Matches are scheduled at Comber Road on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th September, with live music in the bar on the Saturday evening from 6.30-8.30pm.

The men will be taking on Dublin sides Railway Union and YMCA as well as Scottish side Clydesdale whilst the ladies will be playing strong opposition in the form of Pegasus and Lurgan.

The ladies second XI and third XI are both looking to retain league titles won last year and the fourth XI also gained promotion.

In the men’s junior section the second XI were runners up in Junior 1, whilst the third XI, who also play in Junior 1, won the McClements Cup.

The other four junior teams in the men’s section enjoyed their seasons, finishing mid-table.

TRAINING

Pre season training for other Junior ladies teams begins on August 21 from 7-8.30pm and will continue for the duration of the season.

Men’s junior pre-season begins on August 28.

Existing members and as well as those interested in playing for Lisnagarvey for the first time are welcome to attend.
