Andrew has round of his life and Connor hits 64

A total of 180 golfers competed for what is one of the most prestigious trophies in the club.

Andrew, playing off a 16 handicap now 13, had the round of his life. His card was almost flawless. He had 15 pars, 2 bogeys and a shocking triple bogey at the short 12 th hole. That gave him a gross 74 and an amazing nett 58.

Andrew is a young man who takes his golf very seriously. The club professional, Richard Kilpatrick, was instrumental in putting Andrew on the right track. Andrew practised what Richard told him and it is now beginning to pay dividends.

Aidan Doran (18 now 16) was overjoyed to shoot a nett 60. He played very controlled golf, 9 pars and 9 bogeys, a gross 78, nett 60.

A nett 60 would be a winning score 99 times out of a 100. Aidan would have dearly loved to win the Darren Weir Memorial but it was not to be. He had to settle for the runners-up spot.

It was almost a glorious double victory for the Doran family. Aidan’s son, Connor, shot a superb 5 under par 64 to lift the best gross prize.

He had 7 birdies and his playing partners said he should have had 5 or 6 more. What a player!

Eamon McAnarney (12 now 11) won the low section with a nett 64. Gary McCartney (9 now 8) was second in this section with another nett 64.

David Thompson (16 now 15) won the middle section with a nett 65.

Cameron Morton was runner-up with a nett 66.

Paddy McCambridge (23 now 22) won the high section with a nett 64.

Kieran McGreevey (21 now 20) was second with yet another nett 64.

Merton McDowell (21 now 20) was the top senior player with a nett 65.

Nigel Bryson (9) shot a nett 64 and he went home empty-handed.

Young Patrick McNiff (11), Alan Caughey (12), Richard Coburn (10), Adam Kerr (8), Gordon Haire (8) and Shane Bell (7) all came close with nett 65’s.

But the young man to watch out for is Andrew Burns. We will be hearing a lot about him as the season progresses.

Andrew, you have won one of the golf club’s major trophies and you should be very proud.

Sweep Results

Sunday 19th June

John Doran has probably won the Sunday Sweep more times than anyone else. He won it 5 times in 2010, 4 times in 2013 and once in 2014. And he is now off the mark in 2016.

He could set a record that might never be matched.
