Ballyclare Ladies suffer defeat in Senior Cup opener

ALTHOUGH Ballyclare Ladies don’t start their Senior League Section 1 campaign until this weekend, they have already been in competitive action.

This year’s Senior Cup is being played off in sections on a round-robin basis, and Sue Dickey’s girls have been paired with Portadown, Omagh, Larne and Ballymena.

The opening clash with Portadown has already taken place in midweek at Edenvilla where the hosts coasted home on a 3-0 scoreline.

After turning round one up the County Armagh girls forced several penalty-corners, before adding two more in the second session without reply, despite strong tackling by Gillian McMaw, Jade Purdy and Emma Patterson.

Victoria White and Kerry McLeod also impressed in midfield, while goalkeeper Sara Coulter was mush busier than her opposite number.

In the next round of fixtures Ballyclare were scheduled to travel to Omagh on Tuesday 17th, followed by home matches against Larne and Ballymena.

Meanwhile, the opening Senior League Section 1 fixture will be a local derby on Saturday in Larne.

On Saturday Sue Dickey’s girls played Knock at Strathern Grammar School grounds in a friendly that the city girls won 4-3.

Tori Wallace cancelled out a home strike to keep the scores level at the interval.

In the second half goals by Lorraine Ashcroft and Kara Wallace ensured a close finish in the narrow defeat.

Meanwhile, Ballyclare High Schoo’s first XI got off to a good astart with 6-0 win over Grosvenor, while the second XI won 5-0 against the Belfast school.
