Basketball: Magherafelt Titans beaten by Craigavon in season opener

Magherafelt Titans 34-46 Craigavon -The first match of the season for the men’s team at Magherafelt Titans Basketball Club against Craigavon Basketball Club in St Pius X College sadly ended in defeat when Craigavon proved too powerful.

The first quarter started off well for both teams with Titans A Hamilton and S Henry scoring early baskets for Titans but Craigavon responded through Zukas, Sakavicius and Caplinas.

Both teams began to foul each other as the tempo of the match picked up. Further baskets were made by Craigavon’s Abromavicius and Sakavicius only for Hamilton and McCoy to respond for the Magherafelt side to leave the quarter score 14–16 to Craigavon.

The next quarter saw Craigavon pull away outscoring the Titans 14-5 to leave the half time score 18–30 to Craigavon.

The Titans fared no better in the third quarter with their only baskets scored by Hamilton and McGuckin.

Magherafelt tightened their defence and stopped the lead growing any further.

The final quarter was fast-paced with baskets and fouls being given in abundance from both sides. Craigavon’s Caplinas reached his foul limit and was sent off.

Baskets for the Titans were made by McCoy, Hamilton, Bowman, Kelly and McGuckin and Craigavon’s by Teresa, Aeromavicius, Caplinas and Zukas.
